VENUS OF BURNING MAN
COMMISSIONED BY KENT AND VICKI LOGAN

This piece is a three dimensional realization of my experiences at Burning Man, the massive, annual, counter-culture arts festival in the Nevada desert. The figure grew out of a series of images made in collaboration with my longtime friend, John Romero. We photographed people (like Spork in the white dress) sitting in a steel box on wheels we pushed out into the desert.

We tested three plus sized models.
Our choice, Daniella, was a tough collaborator at times screaming in pain, crying, and ultimately vomiting from the discomfort of holding a pose then getting the ultimate waxing as silicone pulls out even the finest body hair. She toughed it out through some grueling casting sessions.
The figure sits in a stainless steel box. The peacock display attached to her back is two dozen machetes. Her dress is sheet lead. Her earrings were hard to find. Everything these days is plastic and dispensable. We found glass syringes from a Russian medical supplier.

We flew the stainless steel box in with a crane.
The stainless steel box was made by Doug Vance at Metal Works.
Like the pedestal she sits on, the skylight above is 24 inches square. Since this photo was taken we have glazed it. The legs on the box were machined out of billet stainless steel.
This is our not-stainless steel box we take to Burning Man.
